Forced power outages complete across region

UPDATE 2.55pm:

Almost 6000 customers in Shepparton are without power.

Extensive forced power outages are continuing in Shepparton after the Australian Energy Market Operator directed electricity distributors to "load shed" throughout the afternoon.

The Powercor website's outage tracker said 2538 customers in Shepparton were affected by an outage in Hawkins St, Shepparton.

A Benalla Rd outage is affecting 1821 customers in Shepparton.

A further 1491 customers in Kialla in a separate outage on Benalla Rd.

The temperature soared to 44.5C in Shepparton at 2.30pm.

Statewide, more than 145,000 customers are without power as the state swelters through extreme heat, putting strain on the electricity system.


There are a number of power outages throughout the district including more than 2000 homes in Shepparton.

The Powercor website's outage tracker listed an outage in Hawkins St, Shepparton which had affected 2538 customers.

It is unknown how long it will take for power to be restored.

There are also outages recorded in Gillieston near Tatura, Merrigum, Undera, Kyabram, Lancaster, Numurkah, Nathalia, Katunga, and Katamatite.

According to a post on the CitiPower and Powercor Facebook page, it had been directed by the Australian Energy Market Operator to begin shedding electricity load across our networks to reduce the risk of extended wide-spread blackouts.

"We are directed to shed load when demand on the electricity grid is greater than the amount of electricity supply that is available. This is not associated with localised network outages," the post read.

"Our control room is now conducting outages on a rotational basis. We will restore power to customer when directed by AEMO."
