Severe weather and flash flood warning for region

By Shepparton News

A severe weather warning is in effect for the region, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning of the possibility of flash flooding.

The Hume Freeway is closed to northbound traffic at the Goulburn Valley Highway due to flooding. Traffic is being diverted through Shepparton onto the the Murray Valley Highway to Wodonga.

Rainfall totals of 15 to 40 mm are expected in Shepparton and surrounds, with 40 to 100mm possible in some areas.

The rain is the result of an almost stationary low pressure trough over central Victoria according to the BOM resulting in rain areas and thunderstorms.

The severe weather warning is likely to continue during tomorrow for some areas of the state.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

  • Not walk, ride or drive through flood water;
  • Keep clear of creeds and storm drains;
  • Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks;
  • Be alert that in areas recent affect by fires, heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
