Riverside Gardens Garden Centre has become a recycling point for Nespresso coffee capsules, offering the Shepparton community a convenient way to dispose of these items sustainably.
The recycling point is part of the Nespresso Coffee Capsules Recycling Program operated by Nespresso and recycling organisation TerraCycle.
Aluminium Nespresso capsules recycled at the centre are sent to a specialist recycling plant based in southern NSW.
There, the aluminium is separated from the residual coffee.
The coffee is then sent to an industrial composting facility to be transformed into compost, while the aluminium is recycled and sent back to the aluminium industry to produce new aluminium products.
Centre manager Larry Smith says the program has been running for years and continues to see a growing number of people taking advantage of the service.
He said the centre sent off 1 to two boxes of capsules a week for recycling.
‘‘It’s a way of recycling the aluminium and it’s good for the environment,’’ he said.
‘‘It fits in well with our industry.’’
Mr Smith encouraged Shepparton residents to bring down their used aluminium Nespresso coffee capsules in a sealed bag and help the cause.
‘‘People can just drop off their bags and go,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s really easy.’’’
TerraCycle Australia and New Zealand general manager Jean Bailliard said she was glad to see so many businesses getting involved.
‘‘We’re really inspired by the commitment of Australian businesses to recycling, and by their hard work in raising awareness about waste and sustainability,’’ she said.
