Shepparton youth will get the chance to learn the skills to be future leaders thanks to an inaugural summit run by Future Voices in partnership with The Ghandi Experiment.
Future Voices project manager and event co-convenor Rashidi Sumaili said the aim of the new event — Building Regional Youth Leadership Summit ‘One region, one people and one future’ — was to inspire, create networks and support global engagements.
Students from most of the high schools across Shepparton will converge on Goulburn Valley Grammar, where they will hear from regional leaders such as Liberal candidate for the seat of Shepparton Cheryl Hammer and GV Grammar principal Mark Torriero, as well as speakers from further afield such as Victor Perton and Margaret Hepworth.
‘‘The purpose of the conference is to initiate developing a 10-year youth leadership regional plan, identifying priority areas, setting specific targets and defining strategies and policy measures,’’ Mr Sumaili said.
Mr Sumaili said the conference would also encourage regional students to think about their leadership potential, their role in their communities, as well as global issues.
‘‘Students are expected to take part in forums which will result in actionable goal-setting,’’ he said.
‘‘Several keynote speakers will offer deep insights from their expert backgrounds, including diplomacy experiences, which will be enshrined into their topics.’’
The summit will run from 8.30am to 3pm on Thursday, June 14 at GV Grammar School.
