Traffic was backed up for about an hour yesterday afternoon following the causeway crash.

A man and woman were taken to hospital yesterday afternoon after their car entered the embankment along the Midland Hwy at the Peter Ross-Edwards Causeway.

Sergeant Jason Frost said the vehicle lost control heading east on the causeway between Shepparton and Mooroopna about 4pm yesterday, where it landed in the embankment facing the road just past SPC KidsTown.

‘‘We believe their vehicle has overturned once or twice, hitting some branches before coming to rest leaning up against a tree,’’ he said.

The driver and passenger, both 30, were trapped when emergency services arrived.

Police, ambulance, CFA and Shepparton Search and Rescue were called to assist in the rescue and clean-up efforts.Shepparton Search and Rescue personnel cut the female passenger from the vehicle. Both vehicle occupants were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Eastbound traffic was backed up for about an hour while the scene was being cleared.
