The Salvation Army is encouraging the community to dig deep this weekend for the annual Red Shield Appeal.
Salvation Army Shepparton’s Captain Karyn Wishart said this weekend’s appeal would see about 50 volunteers collecting donations locally.
‘‘Our aim is to raise $20000 this year,’’ she said.
Ms Wishart said the money raised from the community would be put into the national pool.
The Salvation Army then distributes the funds to communities as needed.
Ms Wishart said the amount raised from the Shepparton area was a small contribution in comparison to the amount distributed back to the region.
Salvation Army northern Victoria social programs director Jo Barrett said the money raised and distributed back to Shepparton was put towards those suffering financial hardship and homelessness.
Ms Wishart said those two programs were what needed the money in our community.
Collectors will be wearing high-visibility vests and be stationed at various locations around Shepparton and Mooroopna, including the Balaclava Rd-Wyndham St intersection, Coles Riverside, Shepparton Aldi, Shepparton SPC, the McLennan St-Echuca Rd intersection and Mooroopna Aldi/Woolworths.
