It is time to dust off your royal wedding commemorative tea towels, posters, cups and saucers and celebrate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials this weekend.
The Tallygaroopna Memorial Hall Committee and CWA will host a special Royal Gala Afternoon Tea on Sunday to celebrate the royal wedding which will take place on Saturday.
CWA member Robyn Slee said they had discovered a dozen historical and more recent posters of Queen Elizabeth at the heritage-listed Tallygaroopna hall, which prompted them to throw the event.
‘‘We discovered them in the back of the hall,’’ she said. ‘‘All the halls used to get (photographs of the royal family) given (to) them.’’
The collection will be on display during the afternoon tea and Ms Slee hoped guests would be able to help in dating the photographs.
Ms Slee said guests were also encouraged to bring along their own royal memorabilia.
The event will act as a fundraiser for the hall, which has a rich history after it was built in 1924.
The hall was the centre of many activities in the town, including concerts, euchre parties, dances, bazaars, a debutante ball and visiting picture shows.
‘‘It had one of the best dance floors in the district,’’ former hall committee member Lyn Currie said.
‘‘It was built during the time King George was reigning, so there’s a poster of him,’’ Ms Slee added.
‘‘We think it’s the oldest (poster).’’
With the hall now run by a committee of volunteers, the event will raise much-needed funds for the hall’s maintenance.
The Royal Gala Afternoon Tea will be held at the Tallygaroopna Memorial Hall, 21 Victoria St, Tallygaroopna, from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, May 20. RSVPs are essential, phone Mel on 0412712490. For more information on the posters and the hall, see Saturday’s Weekend Life.
