While Shepparton awaits faster VLocity trains, the line continues to fall short of its punctuality target.
More than four in every five Shepparton trains arrived on time last month.
The 82 per cent punctuality result marks a slight improvement on previous months, but remains well below V/Line’s target of 92 per cent.
The line has not met the on-time target this year, with February’s 70 per cent the worst result, while January’s 84.4 per cent was best.
Despite this, reliability has kept steady and on target every month this year, with the line recording 99.5 per cent of services arriving in April.
The Seymour line was slightly more tardy, recording an 87 per cent punctuality result and 98 per cent reliability last month.
In a statement, V/Line chief executive James Pinder highlighted the ‘‘Shepparton and Seymour lines both improving’’.
Reasons for delayed services included trains stopping at stations longer than scheduled to allow passengers to board and depart and losing time in the metropolitan network.
‘‘This is the second consecutive month there’s been an increase in punctuality on both lines and reliability of services on these lines remains high and we will work hard to ensure that continues,’’ Mr Pinder said.
But he also highlighted light at the end of the tunnel, with significant Shepparton line works on the horizon.
He pointed to the $313million invested in this year’s Victorian budget, set to eventually allow nine faster VLocity return services to run on the line.
This, alongside stabling and line upgrades, will deliver a fifth return service next year.
‘‘There is a significant investment for the Shepparton corridor as part of the Regional Rail Revival program,’’ he said.
