Christina Bassani (organiser). Liz Connick (MC), Shannon Kneebone (Fernwood), Steven Trevaskis (Runners Club), Mathieu Ryan (Runners Club), Kate Dainton ((Runners Club), Kathy Fuller (organiser) and Barry Pell (Canoe Club).

The Mother’s Day Classic will move from the path around Shepparton’s Victoria Park Lake to the water for the first time this Sunday.

The annual event helps raise funds for breast cancer research and to celebrate and honour those touched by breast cancer.

Shepparton Canoe Club president Barry Bell struck up a plan to participate after receiving an email from organisers saying access to the shed would be blocked on the day.

‘‘I emailed them back and said: ‘Have you ever considered adding a canoe section to the event’?’’ Mr Bell said.

‘‘They thought it was a fantastic idea and we’re looking forward to it.’’

Mr Bell, along with three others, will be completing almost 8km, doing six laps around the lake in individual canoes.

‘‘If anyone else wants to join us, we’ve got plenty of canoes that beginners can handle,’’ he said.

‘‘All you need is a reasonable level of fitness — and you can do less kilometres if you like.’’

Shepparton Runners Club is also gearing up for the event, with runners of all fitness levels to take part.

‘‘It’s nice to have a run around the lake for this great event,’’ committee member Mathieu Ryan said.

The Shepparton Runners Club will have four pacers running between a five- and six-minute pace, giving people the opportunity to challenge themselves if they wish.

‘‘I’ll be running with a pink pram and I’m hoping we get a lot of people out there in pink.’’

Last year, more than 400 people took part in the 4km walk, 4km run or 8km run on a picture-perfect Sunday.

Unfortunately, 2016 was cancelled due to similar weather conditions predicted for this weekend’s event.

The Mother’s Day Classic is on Sunday, May 13, at Victoria Park Lake, Wyndham St, Shepparton. To learn more or register, visit www.mothersday classic.com.au
