Duo needs to be congratulated

- John Head, Shepparton

I read with dismay the article by Damien Stevens in Saturday’s Weekend Life in The News, about some of the social media responses to the arrival of his new daughter Fletcher.

Damien and Cris have been strong and active advocates for the LGBTI+ community in Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley for as long as I can remember.

Their actions have allowed many young people in our conservative region to overcome what has traditionally been an oppressively stigmatised label.

Indeed the GV Pride Group has saved lives of young people who have felt abandoned by family and peers.

People need to understand a family is: loving and caring parents, raising loved children in a secure environment.

Damien and Cris have the right to offer that love and security.

I congratulate Damien and Cris on the birth of Fletcher and on their continued striving for enlightenment, acceptance and enrichment of diversity in our community.

Shepparton is a better place for their efforts.
