Moira Shire Council has reassured residents that despite the global recycling industry shake-up, kerbside collection services will continue unchanged.
The shire’s community general manager Sally Rice said residents should continue recycling as normal.
‘‘Moira residents have achieved excellent results with organics and recycling separation and this positions us well during this shake-up,’’ Ms Rice said.
‘‘Some recycling centres are threatening closure and some councils have been faced with a termination of their recycling service.’’
Ms Rice said the pressures were due to changes to the global recycling market, particularly China imposing tighter restrictions on the quality of recyclable materials.
‘‘Moira residents have consistently achieved some of the lowest bin contamination rates in the state and this helps keep the end products clean and saleable in commodity markets,’’ she said.
‘‘These changes are not unique to Victoria and are impacting recycling worldwide.’’
