Suzanna Sheed wants women to come to the Friendship Cafe session.

Young women from different cultural backgrounds are invited to attend a Friendship Cafe session with State Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed this month.

Following on from the series last year, the event will provide a safe space for young women from multicultural communities, especially new and emerging communities, to share a cup of tea or coffee and friendly conversation with other women.

The new initiative is supported by the Victorian Government’s Department of Justice and Regulation. The department believes locally based partnership projects encourage young women from newly arrived communities participate in community activities that foster interpersonal and community connectedness and their sense of cultural identity.

Ethnic Council of Shepparton’s project co-ordinator Sam Atukorala said the expected long-term outcome would be that these young women had positive cultural identity. They would feel connected to family, friends and community, be confident and positive about their future, and take part in education and employment.

Mr Atukorala said young women from multicultural communities aged 13 to 25 were invited to attend the event.

The Friendship Cafe session is on Wednesday, February 28, from 10am to noon at The Vault, 170 Maude St, Shepparton.
