The NBN rollout has reached Benalla with 2400 homes and businesses already connected and able to place orders with providers.
People living and working in these areas should contact their preferred phone and internet provider to discuss internet usage and determine a package that suits their needs.
The remaining 1700 homes and businesses in Benalla are expected to be able to make the switch by the end of September.
NBN Victoria and Tasmania head Ebony Aitken said the rollout in Benalla was ‘‘great news’’ for households and businesses.
‘‘For the first time local residents will have a choice of speeds when selecting a broadband package — people should ask their phone and internet provider about the actual speeds they can expect to experience when they switch to a plan over NBN, particularly during peak times,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s important to remember that making the switch is not automatic. To continue using your landline and internet services, you’ll need to contact your preferred phone and internet provider to place an order.
‘‘The rollout of the NBN ... is one of the biggest transformations to happen to Australia’s telecommunications industry.
‘‘We’re working hard ... to provide access to the best broadband experience possible and to help everyone better understand what factors influence broadband speeds.’’
There are more than 150 phone and internet providers that sell NBN retail plans.
