Picola man remains in hospital following gas explosion

A Picola man, in his early 60s, remains in a stable condition at The Alfred Hospital after he was injured in a gas explosion on Thursday.

A Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said the gas explosion happened at an address in Moran St, Picola at about 3.30pm.

Firefighters, police and paramedics arrived quickly to help the man.

‘‘He was heating a piece of steel to bend it and has somehow caused an explosion,’’ Nathalia police Leading Senior Constable Bernie O’Dwyer said.

‘‘It was a horrendously loud bang which was hear 8km away ... he received injuries including burns to his face and shrapnel wounds to his stomach.’’

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the man was flown in a stable condition to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.

Today, an Alfred Hospital spokeswoman said the patient remained in a stable condition.
