Birds of many types, sizes and colours were celebrated at Goulburn Valley Avicultural Society of Australia’s annual bird expo and sale last weekend.

The event, held on Sunday at the multi-purpose centre at Shepparton Showgrounds, has been running for 25 years and this year attracted about 50 sellers.

Secretary Ron Hicks, of Echuca, said hundreds of people attended the popular show.

‘‘We have a lot of people from all across Victoria and southern NSW bring birds along for sale,’’ he said.

‘‘We had budgies and canaries, through to large parrots, macaws and cockatoos, probably the most popular are the small to medium-sized parrots.

‘‘This time of year all the birds are finished breeding and it’s an ideal opportunity for people to sell off what they bred last year.’’

Mr Hicks said there were a number of commercial exhibitors at the show, and an avian vet on hand to offer advice to bird owners. There was also a chance to purchase food and cage toys.
